About Moss Landings

Five calculators for the ground layer of a garden: what goes on the beds, under the paths and beneath the lawn.

What the calculators do

Each page turns measurements into an order you can take to a garden centre or a landscape yard. You describe the area as simple shapes (rectangles, circles, rings round trees, borders, triangles or an area you already know), add them up or subtract the parts you will not cover, and the page works out the rest:

Every calculator works in feet and inches or in metres and centimetres, and switching converts what you have typed.

Where the numbers come from

Depths, seeding and nitrogen rates come from university extension services, the Royal Horticultural Society and similar public guidance, and each page lists its sources with links. Material densities are typical published values and are labelled as such: the stone, soil or mulch from your supplier may weigh more or less, so the pages let you type their figure instead. When a guide gives a range, the calculator shows the range rather than a single number.

How it works

The pages are static files and every calculation runs in your browser. What you type is not sent anywhere. Your colour theme and unit choice are remembered in your browser's local storage; the privacy page has the details, including the cookie-free page-view counting by Cloudflare Web Analytics.

Use the results as a plan

These are planning estimates. Bags, pallets and loads differ between suppliers, and the label on a bag of seed or fertiliser always comes first. Check rules on phosphorus and on work near water with your local authority before you feed or dig.
